Jackson Delamont scored a very impressive third place finish in the Scott Darley Challenge, held last weekend at Valvoline Raceway.
Jackson drove a calculated race and in the middle stages of the 40 lap event, led for a number of laps before falling into the clutches of eventual winner Trevor Green and second placed Jamie Veal.
“We went into the two night show hoping to at least make one main event. That was sort of a goal we set ourselves,” Jackson said today as the team prepared to hit Avalon in Geelong, Victoria today.
“On the first night we tried something different setup wise and whilst it took a while to get used to, we had a good night. We fell back to twenty-second and came back to finish ninth.
“On night two we actually found an issue that we have had since the opening meeting of the season. We have had an issue where the motor would cut out coming out of the corner, well the main fuel block was in the wrong way around and the motor was getting full of fuel. Once we fixed that, it helped me a great deal in the feature.”
Starting from the second row of the 40 lap A-Main, Jackson ran the bottom of the race track and delivered a tactical performance, leading a number of laps.
“I think we suffered from a bit of inexperience,” Jackson noted. “On the restart, Trevor (Green) squeezed me a bit and I fell back to third. In saying that, I was really happy to get a podium finish. With the calibre of drivers there on the weekend, it was a great result for us.”
Meanwhile, Jackson’s southern sojourn begins tonight at Avalon Raceway for the President’s Cup followed by Mount Gambier’s Borderline Speedway on Thursday and arguably the biggest Sprintcar event in Australia, the Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic, set for Premier Speedway, Warrnambool this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Jackson will be qualifying on the Friday night of the Classic.
“I can’t wait to get back to a track with a wall,” he says with a smile, “I tend to struggle when there is no wall and I can gauge a lot better when I race on a track with a wall. I am probably in the minority of drivers who base themselves in Sydney!
“We proved at Avalon last year we can make the field. Hopefully we can leave Mount Gambier with no damage and give it our best shot at the Classic.”
