49 Sprintcars Nominated This Saturday Night
Author : Sydney Speedway
After two consecutive washouts, Sydney Speedway will flick the switch on round eleven of the sprintcar track championship this Saturday night, February 9. The crash and bash of the Bendy 500 will also be on track along with the super sedans and the little pocket rocket legend cars.
The sprintcars have entered another huge field of forty-nine cars which is quite possibly the most open field all season. There are interstate stars Trevor Green and Danny Reidy along with Sydney Speedway regular, Alan Woods and fellow Queenslanders Steve Johnson, Steve Rowell and Aiden Gee. Victorian Ash Burke has also nominated in Peter Bourke’s number eighty-nine machine.
The all-important sprintcar track championship is reaching an exciting conclusion as there are only five rounds remaining, including tonight. Ian Madsen holds a sixty-four point lead over Ben Atkinson and Atkinson is just thirty-four points ahead of sprintcar rookie, Matt Smith. Garry Brazier and James Thompson round out the top five with Warren Ferguson, Max Johnston, Roddy and Toby Bellbowen and Grant Tunks rounding out the top ten.
The pointscore is still wide open and thoughts are already turning to April 13 when the grand final hits the track. Could it go down to the wire on the final night? We will have to wait and see.
The fender bender division will contest the time-honoured Bendy 500. The event was held annually in the early 90’s before taking a break and making a triumphant return last season. The field last year attracted many visiting drivers and this year is no exception. Organisers have received thirty-seven nominations for the event which includes many drivers from the tracks around NSW.
The 500 (20-lap) will start twenty four cars with additional cars sent onto the track should any cars exit on a stoppage. Last season Goulburn driver Kirk Amos took home the honours. Will a visiting driver clean sweep again? Make sure you are trackside to find out!
The legend cars and super sedans have also entered good, competitive fields and will no doubt put on their usual close racing.
Gates open on Saturday, February 9 at 2pm with the opening heat for the super sedans scheduled for 5:45pm. The main action including sprintcars kicks off at 7pm.
