A stellar field of more than 30 Sprintcars including local hero and reigning Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic champion Brock Hallett have signalled their intentions to compete this Sunday night at Portland’s Southern 500 Speedway in a landmark event for the Eureka Garages and Sheds Sprintcar Series as it’s been more than three decades since Southern 500 has hosted Sprintcars.

While Hallett’s nomination among others adds excitement to the event, series points will be extremely important for series leader and recent round winner Terry Rankin while Matthew Reed, Tim Hutchins, Jordy Race and Ashley Cook are among the top 5 in the standings with three rounds remaining.

January’s Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic win was the biggest victory of Hallett’s Sprintcar career and paid an impressive $50,000 to win when he defeated World of Outlaws superstar Sheldon Haudenschild in a memorable last lap pass for the win and he will be hoping to bring that winning form to Southern 500 Speedway Sunday night.

“It was definitely a career highlight for me that’s for sure, every Sprintcar racer grows up watching the Classic and dreaming of one day winning it and now to be among those drivers to have won it is very cool,” said Brock from his Portland base.

Hallett is not the only Classic champion in the field as Queensland’s Lockie McHugh won the 2022 Classic and will also suit up on Sunday night. In a further boost rapid young Tasmania Sprintcar racer Tate Frost won a prelim feature at this year’s Classic and is also in the field for Sunday evening.

“Sprintcar racing is so tough in this area and fans are in for a real treat Sunday night with the quality of drivers that are coming to Portland for this event.”

“It will be great for the area and a real boost for the Southern 500 club and I’m sure there will be a big crowd there to see Sprintcars for the first time in more than 30 years,” confirmed Brock.

Driving for Toowoomba based car owners Graham and Wendy Erhart, Hallett doesn’t believe anyone will have an advantage on Sunday night as all drivers will be on the track for the first time in open Sprintcar competition despite several drivers competing at the venue in other classes.

“That’s the challenge to adapt quickly and make the most of every time you roll out onto the track, qualifying is very important to set up your night and that’s going to be the focus on Sunday night to make sure I get a good qualifying time in.”

“There’s no doubt those drivers that have raced a lot have the ability to dial in quickly to what the track will offer, the experience of some of the drivers in the field will be their only advantage on a track that none of us have been on before,” said Brock.

While Hallett’s GW Racing team may be Queensland based there’s no lack of local support for the Classic champion in the way of Portland based partners Portland Earth Movers, Allstar Graphics, One Stop Carpentry and Bryant’s Forestry.

Hallett won’t be the only Portland based Sprintcar racer in the field with series regular Adam King among the field along with a pair of Sprintcar rookies Angus Hollis and Daniel Storer.

Storer was in victory lane last Saturday night at Horsham’s round of the C&H Trucking Pro Sprint Series while Hollis tasted heat race success at Mount Gambier, also on Saturday night.

More firepower on Sunday evening will come in the way of South Australia’s Daniel Pestka who’s recorded numerous A-main wins across recent seasons including recently at Murray Bridge Speedway. Pestka is also the reigning Eureka Garages and Sheds Sprintcar Series champion and despite not chasing the series points this season is always a welcome addition.

Further inclusions include Eureka Garages and Sheds Sprintcar Series round winners Grant Stansfield and Chris Solomon who will join Cook and Rankin as round winners this season.

All drivers will contest time trials, a heat race each plus the top 8 shootout while a B-main will all occur prior to the 30 lap A-main.
