Lines Continues to Make Gains

For the second time in the 2017-18 season, Steven Lines and the Halls Motorsport Team visited the podium at Avalon Raceway, this time placing second in last Saturday night’s Fireball Derby, which doubled as the sixth Eureka Garages & Sheds Sprintcar Series round.

Having already performed strongly at the Geelong track earlier in the season, coming home in third place in last month’s Jackpot Invitational event, the Mount Gambier, South Australia-based racer was once again on the pace throughout Saturday night’s event, with a pleasing run during his heat races seeing him qualify on the inside of the third row for the 30-lap feature race.

Moving into fourth in the opening stages, Lines continued to chase down the race’s front-runners over the next eight laps, eventually managing to get the jump on Peter Doukas on lap 10 to claim third place. Defending his position on a subsequent restart, Lines was able to reel in second-placed Corey McCullagh, pipping him just in time for the red lights to come out due to a crash which occurred just behind him.

From there, it was all smooth sailing for the 33-year-old pilot of the Brian Hall-owned WA # 3 ARB Albany 4WD and Camping Centre supported Cool car, who was pleased with his consistent and competitive performance, which rewarded him with the runner-up finish to race winner James McFadden.

Earlier in the night, Lines was second quickest in his time trial group, before winning his opening heat race from position two, and finishing third in heat-race two, after starting from towards the rear of the field in 11th.

For their next appearance, Lines and the Halls Motorsport team will be heading to Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway (Vic) to contest this Saturday night’s third annual Max’s Race. The team will then prepare for World Series Sprintcars Speedweek, which will take place over five rounds during the Christmas-New Year period.
