The opening round of the 2017/18 Australian 360ci All Stars Sprintcars Series got off to a great start for Brenten Farrer as he surged from position 19 on the starting grid to secure a runner-up finish at the Timmis Speedway at Mildura on Saturday night.

After starting the night with the fourth fastest lap in time trials Brenten recorded a second-place finish in his opening heat before failing to finish his second preliminary due to an engine issue sending him to the B-Main. After scraping through in fifth position Brenten took his spot on the back row of the final and after 30 laps he just fell one spot short of an improbable race victory.

“The feature took 3 or 4 goes to get going as I think everyone was keen to win it in turn one. I knew I had to be patient starting that far back. Once we got going I just tried to pick one off a car per lap. After making pretty good progress there was a restart with about 12 to go and from that point I wasn't really sure where I was as there was cars going left right and centre” added Brenten following the feature race.

“With 3 laps to go I caught the second placed car and I just used a couple of lap cars to my advantage and took the spot coming of 4. It was as good as a win for me, to run second to a two-time Australian champion (410ci) is as good as it gets. We battled motor issues all night so hopefully we can sort it before Moama”.

Unfortunately, despite his runner-up result in the A-Main Brenten is still well down in the overall points chase after the opening round as the Championship incorporates heat results and after dropping heat he is currently in 19th overall. But on the positive side there are still a further 10 rounds in the Championship and Brenten has proven he has the car speed required to make a charge up the leader board.

The next round of the Australian 360ci All Stars Sprintcar Series will be at the Heartland Raceway at Moama on November 18, 2017.
