Scorgie’s Strong Start

It’s been a competitive start to the 2017-18 season for 410 Sprintcar racer Brendan Scorgie, and he is quick to credit a lot of that to the addition of experienced crew chief Dwayne Lawrence to his team.

The decision to partner up with Lawrence in what is Scorgie’s third full season in 410 Sprintcars has proven to be a good one, with the 31-year-old racer achieving his maiden top-10 result with the class at Sydney’s Valvoline Raceway in last Saturday night’s third Ultimate Sprintcar Championship NSW round.

Qualifying directly into the feature race at Valvoline Raceway for the first time, Scorgie started from position 13 for the 30-lap feature race and was then able to manage the challenging track conditions in what was a turbulent feature race to come home in a pleasing ninth place aboard his NS # 57 Yass Valley Tyre Service / EFI Spares supported Maxim car.

While pleased with his performance on the track, Scorgie admits that he wouldn’t have been able to do it without the help of his new Sydney-based crew chief, whose assistance both at the track and away from it allows Scorgie to spend more time thinking about his racing.

“There’s no doubt that our strong start to the season and last Saturday night’s result is in no small part due to the help and advice that Dwayne has been giving me,” commented Scorgie, whose opening 2017-18 season appearance at Valvoline Raceway saw him strongly leading the B main until his header broke, causing him to be black flagged.

“Not only does it allow me to keep my mind on the racing when I’m at the track, but being based over three hours apart, Dwayne has passed on a lot of his knowledge to help me with my maintenance between race meetings.

“I also think I'm both mentally and physically at the fittest that I've ever been, which also gives me plenty of confidence coming into the season

“On Saturday night, I was racing in memory of my nan (Lola), who passed away recently, so there was certainly extra emotion on the night and to come away with a good result was extra special.”

Scorgie, who resides in Yass, which is in the Southern Tablelands region of NSW, is looking forward to completing the majority of this season’s Valvoline Raceway schedule, while also planning to travel down to the southern states later in the New Year to contest the Grand Annual Classic at Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway (Vic) and the Australian Title at Mount Gambier’s Borderline Speedway (SA). He also plans to participate in the Queensland Easter Trail in late March.

Scorgie would like to thank the following 2017-18 season sponsors: Yass Valley Tyre Service, EFI Spares, Wells Transport, and Yass Firewood Supplies. Special thanks must go to Terry Scorgie (dad), Dwayne Lawrence and Jay Waugh.
