This weekend’s World Series Sprintcars Grand Final will provide the equivalent of two rounds of points, leaving the championship battle well and truly open between James McFadden, Jamie Veal and Brooke Tatnell.

Perth Motorplex Speedway Manager, Gavin Migro was excited by the prospect of two rounds over two nights, leaving the championship anything but resolved.

“With the first ever round of World Series held at Claremont, it’s fantastic to have the Grand Final of the 30th year at the Motorplex, and unlike previous years, this is two separate rounds over two nights, so it leaves the championship undecided potentially right up until the last race. Then throw into that the current Australia #1 and #2 in the Madsen brothers and we have some very talented spoilers in the pack to upset the apple cart.”

Series Leader James McFadden said he wasn’t completely comfortable with his substantial lead, but knew he had to be smart to claim the championship.

“People think that we will just play it safe now that we are defending our lead, but it hasn’t been like that so far and we had great car speed at the Motorplex at the beginning of the season, so don’t think we will be conservative, because that’s just not how we race!”

Reigning champion and current runner up in points, Jamie Veal was philosophical about his chances of defending his title despite being less than one A-main win behind McFadden, however Warrnambool’s new favourite son is embracing the idea of a full points payout after the racers put the idea forward at last year’s WSS Stakeholders meeting.

“With the previous 2 night format where we ran a preliminary A-main, it didn’t carry many more points than a heat race, which was tough when you’re going hard for 20 laps. But this weekend, it’s essentially two rounds with full points on offer for both nights, so it’s great for the fans and the series.”

“But I’m not sure it will help our chances though, because all three of us seem to finish close together anyway. Last Saturday at Bunbury we were the top three in qualifying, shootout and main so if that trend continues, the gap will stay pretty similar to what it’s been since I was disqualified at Brisbane for missing the scales.”

McFadden leads the series on 3377 points, 235 ahead of Veal with a further 277 points back to Tatnell.
