New Murray Bridge Speedway Club Sub-Committees
Author : MBS

The club is currently setting up a number of volunteer sub committees in order to manage different portfolios within the club. They are designed to bring some structure and organisation to these tasks to ensure we continue to be ready for each event. We are therefore looking for interested persons to become involved to assist on the different sub-committees.

It is envisaged that each committee would only meet for half an hour or so every few weeks in order to discuss the jobs that require attention. A co-ordinator will head up each committee and liaise with the General Manager in relation to managing the tasks and arranging budgets for expenses. Sub-committee members would then be able to complete the assigned tasks in their own timeframes.

Machinery Maintenance Sub Committee

Led by Andrew Frahn, Patrick Mutlow and Mick Bagorski, we seek experienced persons with mechanical background to assist with meeting to meeting servicing of all of our vehicles including tractors, trucks, push vehicles, pumps, and other machinery. Tasks include simple tasks such as checking fluid levels, changing cutting edges on the grader and fuelling, to more complex tasks such as brakes and rebuilds – it simply depends on what is required throughout the year. We suggest this sub-committee meet in the speedway clubrooms on the second Tuesday of each month for a 30 minute meeting from 5.30pm to discuss, allocate and manage the jobs for the next month.

Grounds Maintenance Sub Committee

Led by Phil Caldecott and Michael Pitcher, we seek anyone who is able to give a few hours to the club to assist in maintaining the speedway venue. All year round tasks include mowing, spaying and watering, while special projects may include things like re-sleepering the turn one spectator mound which would be over the expanded timeframe. Another project for this off-season include erecting barriers on the infield and addressing some infield drainage issues. We would also like to further establish the infield grass over the coming months. Other projects include cleaning out the build up of track marterial between the catch fence and crowd control fence, some electrical work with the racing lights and catch fence maintenance. We plan to tackle these projects through a number of working bees from July to September, while other projects will be on-going.

Race Track Building and Maintenance

Led by Rob Lloyd and Tim McAvaney, we seek a couple of interested persons who are willing to learn the art of track building prior to a race meeting, and maintaining the race track at race meetings. Training will be provided over the course of the year to operate machinery such as the grader and water trucks. The work required in the lead up to a race meeting varies depending upon the time of year and the weather forecast. For instance, during the middle of the summer season, the track preparation would begin on a Tuesday or Wednesday with the bulk of water being added in the first couple of days, and the finer detailing occurring on the Friday and Saturday afternoon. Track prep can occur during the day or after office hours, depending upon the availability of volunteers.

Express your interest: For further information on any of the sub-committees, please contact Tim McAvaney (8532 1150) or one of the co-ordinators of the respective sub-committee directly.
