Toby salvages eighth despite motor mishaps

It was a night of mixed fortunes for the Cranebrook, NSW driver last Saturday night at Valvoline Raceway.

After setting fourth quick time in time trials, Toby qualified for the all-important dash to determine his starting position in the main event.

“It seems like we can start the night of good,” Toby explained. “Saturday was our worst qualifying result of the season with a fourth, so we can't complain about that. We can't seem to adapt to the track good enough as the track dries out though, and we will be concentrating on that in the next one.”

During the dash, that’s where it all went wrong. A loose rocker cover caused oil to spill, therefore causing a spectacular flash fire. Toby pulled up very quick and the Valvoline Raceway Crash Crew were quickly on the scene to extinguish the flames and get Toby out safely.

Once the car was returned to the pits, the crew looked over the engine, deciphered the problem and Toby was good to go for the A-Main, starting from position eleven.

A consistent run and gaining three places saw Toby eventually finish eighth. This has given Toby a clear fifth place in the track championship going into the next meeting.

“I was happy that out of 50 cars entered, we had a terrible night and managed to finish 8th. I'm disappointed that we had a terrible night though. We need to be better sooner rather than later if we want to stay in the hunt for a championship. I know we can do it, it's about reaching that potential that we are capable of.

“We will sit down this week and discuss what we need to change. Chris Muir is dedicated to running better and I'm more determined than ever. I'm excited to make progress with him. But we do have a bunch of work to do, especially with the international season looming.”

Toby has another weekend off with no Sprintcar racing set for Sydney. He will return to the track on Saturday, November 8.

Toby’s upcoming schedule, post November 8, is as follows;

Saturday, November 22 - Valvoline Raceway - Sprintcar Track Championship round 5
Saturday, December 6 - Valvoline Raceway – Sprintcar Track Championship round 6
