Hickman Not So Rusty
Author : Redline Media
A solid performance in last Saturday night’s opening Eureka Garages & Sheds Sprintcar Series round at Geelong’s Avalon Raceway saw Rusty Hickman start his 2017-18 season in positive fashion, coming away with a pleasing runner-up finish to Jamie Veal.
Debuting his brand-new Vic # 40 Hickman’s Tree Maintenance supported J&J and Maxwill Racing Engines package, Hickman showed good pace from the outset, placing second in his opening heat race and fourth in his second, before starting up eighth for the 30-lap feature race.
Moving up to sixth place when an accident on the first turn caused a complete restart, Hickman immediately managed to advance further into fourth place at the drop of the green flag, when fifth-place starter Glen Sutherland backed up the field due to damage he’d sustained to his car.
Continuing to make his way forward as the race progressed by capitalising on lapped traffic, Hickman took over third place on lap 12, before passing Brett Milburn for the second spot with just five laps remaining and going on to claim an impressive runner-up finish behind one of the country’s leading drivers in Veal.
“When you’re up against a driver the calibre of Jamie, second place feels almost as good as first,” admitted the 17-year-old racer from Bendigo in Victoria.
“I have to thank Dave Challons from J&J Auto Racing and Peter Morris from Maxwill Racing Engines for my car and engine package, which was fast and competitive from the outset. I also have to give huge credit to my dad Darren for giving me such a great feature-race setup.
“I’m really looking forward to the rest of the 2017-18 season. Hopefully I can continue running towards the front of the field and progress as a racer.”
Planning to do as much racing as possible throughout the season, Hickman will contest close to 30 shows, with his next appearance being this Saturday night’s second Eureka Garages & Sheds Series round at Moama’s Heartland Raceway.
