J&J'S DEFEAT OUTLAWS, ALL-STARS, ASCS, USCS, PST, SOS
McKENZIE, TN - The victory parade at dirt tracks across the United States and Canada continued last week as nine drivers were winners in J&J Auto Racing Sprint cars. Donny Schatz swept the Outlaws weekend, Tim Shaffer defeated the All-Stars, Sam Hafertepe, Jr. and Jeff Swindell were ASCS National event winners, Derek Hagar continued his incredible season in USCS, Jared Zimbardi won the PST Canada event, Shane Morgan put on a show in the Southern Outlaw Sprint Car Series in Mississippi, Brad Haudenschild won both the feature event and track championship at Wayne Co., Kyle Sager won again in New Mexico and Jordan Ryan became the youngest 305 champion at Attica Raceway Park.
DONNY SCHATZ
Five-time World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series champion continued to dominate action as the Outlaws went north of the border for the second time. Schatz, who in late July wheeled Tony Stewart Racing's No. 15 STP/Armor All/Crimsafe backed J&J to three consecutive wins in eastern Canada, won twice at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton, taking both Friday night's 30-lap WoO A-Feature and Saturday's 30-lap Oil City Cup finale.
“We’ve always had great races when we’ve come up here and always enjoyed it," said Schatz, who leads the Outlaws title chase by 177 points. "(The Oil City Cup win is) not just for me, it’s for this whole STP race team. These guys are unbelievable and they definitely do their job to the best of their abilities. Hats off to them. Without their hard work and dedication and what they do, there’s no way I’d be standing here.”
The victories pushed his 2014 total to 17 WoO A-Feature wins and 163 WoO A-Feature career wins.
SAM HAFERTEPE, JR.
Sam Hafertepe, Jr. was the class of the field in last Thursday's Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by MAVTV American Real inaugural Mid-South Showdown at Riverside International Speedway. Hafertepe, Jr. piloted his familiar No. 15h J&J to the victory after passing fellow J&J runner Jeff Swindell (No. 94 J&J) with five laps remaining. The win was his third national ASCS triumph of 2014.
"This place has got to be the most awesome place to win a race. I mean, just look at all the history here," said Hafertepe after the win. "I know Jeff blew up there, but man that was awesome. I wish we could have run lapped traffic all night long."
Swindell would hang on to finish second to complete a top-two J&J sweep.
DEREK HAGAR
Derek Hagar's incredible 2014 season continued Saturday night at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, Georgia. Hagar won his second consecutive USCS feature event in his No. 9jr J&J taking the lead with just six laps remaining the 25-lap A-main. The victory was his eighth USCS triumph of 2014 and 29th of his career.
"I saw my opportunity and took it," said Hagar. "We've been pretty dominant on this tour in 2014. There's more opportunities coming for us and I'm just thankful for everyone who's helped me get to this point. I'm having a lot of fun."
Terry Gray (No. 10 J&J ) finished third, Eric Riggins, Jr. (No. 47t J&J) fourth and Morgan Turpen (No. 10m J&J) was fifth to give J&J four of the top-five finishers.
JEFF SWINDELL
Jeff Swindell gave J&J a second consecutive ASCS National event winner last Friday by topping the field at Lexington 104 Speedway in Lexington, Tennessee. He wheeled the Heartland Catfish/H&H Container Services backed No. 94 J&J into the runner-up spot early on before tracking down Tony Bruce, Jr. and taking the lead midway through the race. He would not be headed again en route to his 14th career national tour win.
"The Heartland Catfish car has just been performing great," admitted the winner. "We should have won last night. We should have won here last year too, so this is pretty sweet." Derek Hagar finished third in his No. 9jr J&J to give J&J two of the three spots on the podium, with Sam Hafertepe, Jr. (No. 15h J&J) following his Riverside win with a fifth-place finish. JARED ZIMBARDI
Jared Zimbardi simply had to start Saturday's Patriot Sprint Tour Canada Championship feature event to claim the 2014 championship. He put an exclamation point on his season by racing his No. 35 J&J from the fourth starting position into the lead on lap four and led the rest of the way in the 25-lap main event. It was his first career win at Cornwall Motor Speedway and in five PST Canada starts, he picked up four wins and a second.
TIM SHAFFER
Tim Shaffer returned to victory lane Saturday night at Mercer Raceway Park as he defeated the University of Northwestern Ohio All Star Circuit of Champions contingent. Shaffer wheeled Brian Grove's No. 45 Canton Erectors/Gressman Powersports sponsored J&J to victory in the 25th running of the Western Pennsylvania Sprint Car Championship Presented by Bonnell’s Rod Shop. The victory was his fourth career win at Mercer and 54th career All-Star win.
"I’m just happy to win…it’s been awhile,” said Shaffer, who was able to maneuver lapped traffic to perfection to take the win. “You got to have some luck in this game, you know, and catching them at the right time is definitely an advantage…you have to make it happen to get by and you can’t get tied up too long,”
Holtgraver finished second after starting eighth in the No. 10 J&J. Lee Jacobs (No. 81 J&J) finished fourth ahead of Carl Bowser (No. 10 J&J), Cap Henry (No. 53 J&J) and Adam Kekich (No. 5k J&J) to give J&J six of the top seven finishers.
KYLE SAGER
Kyle Sager returned his No. 9K J&J to victory lane again at Southern New Mexico Speedway in Las Cruces. After starting fourth, Sager raced his way into the lead and went on to score the victory in the ASCS 305 Winged Sprint car feature.
BRAD HAUDENSCHILD
Brad Haudenschild started on the front row in Saturday's Fisher Performance Sprints main event at NAPA Wayne County Speedway in Orriville, Ohio, and was never headed. He wheeled his No. 38k Kempthorn Automall, Fire & Ice Pub, Medi Taxi backed J&J to a flag-to-flag victory for his sixth triumph of the year and clinched the track championship.
SHANE MORGAN
Shane Morgan put on a show last Saturday in the Southern Outlaw Sprint Car Series event at Hattiesburg (Mississippi) Speedway. The driver of the No. 01 J&J quickly took command of the 50-lap main event by racing around the top groove. By the midway point, he had lapped up to seventh place. Following a red flag stoppage for fuel and adjustments, the race resumed with Morgan at the tail. He reached sixth on lap 30. Contact with another car sent him to the rear again, but Morgan wasn't to be denied and raced his way back to the lead in a handful of laps and went on to claim the win.
ATTICA RACEWAY PARK
Jordan Ryan won the 2014 305 season championship at Attica Raceway Park this past Saturday in his No. 5 J&J and by doing so, became the youngest driver at 17 to win a track championship.
