Team Westpoint Ford Open Local Eyes - Interstate Now Beckons
Author : Team Westpoint Ford
Team Westpoint Ford Racing made their local debut at Geelong’s Avalon Raceway last Saturday night (October 27) in the opening round of the Eureka Garages and Sheds Series, but after such a promising night it quickly turned sour 12 laps into the final. This Saturday night (November 4) Ramsay will compete at Adelaide’s Speedway City before heading further west for World Series Sprintcars.
All off-season Team Westpoint Ford Racing had been looking forward to the opening race date at their local venue Avalon Raceway and it came to fruition on a balmy night in front of a large and vocal crowd.
Westpoint Ford provided a number of giveaways, including signed cricket bats and books from former Australian cricketer and current national selector Merv Hughes.
“The crowd really enjoyed the chance to win some great prizes via a football being kicked out into the crowd. It was a successful night for Westpoint Ford and we plan on actually bringing Merv Hughes to Avalon later in the season,” said Westpoint Ford’s David Dickson.
It was Ramsay’s first time in a 410 cubic inch powered Sprintcar on his home track and the extra mumbo with his brand new Maxim chassis combined together smoothly for some impressive heat results that qualified Ramsay into sixth highest on points leading into the top six time trial.
Ramsay was striking in the time trial, setting the second quickest time (12.273), which elevated him to the front row of the final alongside David Murcott, who elected to start from the outside.
“It was a real highlight for me in the time trial, coming from sixth to second and then getting pole position. There was a good buzz amongst the team before the final,” Ramsay said.
Unfortunately for Ramsay, 12 laps into the final he clipped the turn three and four wall and rolled over while in fifth position.
“Obviously it was a very disappointing way to end, fortunately we only damaged the two wings and a front axle, so we are ready to go in Adelaide this weekend,” enthused Ramsay.
This Saturday night is the beginning of a hectic month for Team Westpoint Ford Racing, with the Australian Sprintcar Masters at Speedway City, followed by the opening rounds of World Series Sprintcars at Perth Motorplex, Western Australia on November 9 and 10 and then the third round at Kalgoorlie Raceway on November 14.
While returning to home base in Geelong, Ramsay will also compete in the fourth round of WSS on November 17 at Speedway City before the second round of the Eureka Garages and Sheds Series at Warrnambool’s Sungold Stadium on November 24.
“It’s a huge month for us and in reality without Westpoint Ford, we wouldn’t be able to do it. Hopefully we can be consistent and fly the Victorian flag high at these interstate races,” Ramsay said.
